Marine biotechnology is a vast subject that studies the forms of deep ocean life and the use of marine bio materials and marine life in the industries relating to agriculture, food and cosmetics.
An international conference entitled “Second GCC Marine Biotechnology Conference: Emerging Opportunities and future perspectives” was recently conducted at the Sultan Qaboos University, Sultanate of Oman from 31-10-2017 to 01-11-2017. Two promising researchers who are actively working in the field of marine biotechnology from the “Applied Biology Section” of the department of applied sciences presented research papers at this conference. The talks of these two faculty members are delivered at the Alfaham Stage of the Sultan Qaboos University Culture Center.
Dr. Noel Vinay Thomas from the Applied Biology Section of the Department of applied sciences has participated and delivered a talk on his research topic "Phlorotannins and their Medicinal and Cosmeceutical Applications" on 31-10-2017 from 5-50 pm to 6-10 pm in the Marine natural products session chaired by Dr. Roberto Abdala, Photobiology Service, Central Research Services (SCAI), University of MálagaBvd of Spain. Professor Claire Hellio, Professor in Marine Chemical Ecology from the Biology Department of University of Brest, France was the rapporter for this session.
Dr. Umaima Al-Hoqani from the Applied Biology Section, HCT had participated and of the Department of applied sciences had participated and delivered a talk on her research topic "Biotechnological potential of Nannochloropsis” on 1-11-2017 from 1-50 pm to 2-10 pm in the Aquaculture and fisheries session. Dr. Wenresti G. Gallardo, College of Agricultural and marine sciences, Sultan Qaboos University was the rapporter for this session.
Both Dr. Noel Vinay Thomas and Dr. Umaima Al-Hoqani expressed their profound thanks to Dr. Mohammed Ali Oueslati, Head of the Department of Applied Sciences and Dr. Afraa Said Al-Adawi, HoS of Applied Biology section for their current support and facilities. Dr. Umaima Al-Hoqani also wishes to acknowledge the kind help of Professor Saul Purton of University College London during this research.
This activity was encouraged by department of applied sciences in order to meet the partial requirements of Goal-6 of the strategic plan: Support staff participation in research-oriented events, such as conferences and workshops.
