ITBiz Student Organization
The IT Department aims not only to mould the students academically but also to boost them socially and morally. Hence, an Information Systems' student organization curtly called ITBiz was formed to keep the students proactive and get engaged to socio-academic activities.
Below is the Terms of Reference of the student organization that describes its purpose and objectives, membership, organizational structure, election of officers, roles and responsibilities of officers, meetings, supervisorship, and calendar of activities.
TERMS OF REFERENCE
FOR THE INFORMATION SYSTEMS STUDENT ORGANIZATION
The Information Systems student organization is conceptualized to empower students to engage themselves to join varied academic and extra-curricular activities of the specialization. This will allow students to focus on their own field of specialization that will hone their skills and talents by sharing, interacting, and collaborating with others.
I. Name. The name of the student organization has to be proposed by the pioneering set of officers of the student organization itself subject for approval by the HoG and staff members. The Information Systems student organization shall bear the official name throughout. The concept of Information System has to be apparent in consideration to the proposed name of the specialization. II. Purpose and Objectives. The student organization endeavors to achieve the following objectives:

1) To promote the Information Systems specialization;
2) To strengthen leadership and spirit of fellowship among student populace, supporting academic and extra-curricular activities;
3) To serve as a bridge or liaison organization to extend official information to the rest of Information Systems students, through available communication technologies or any other means;
4) To host Information Systems-related competitions, conferences, technical publications, and other appropriate activities;
5) To encourage sharing of knowledge and resources among Information Systems students;
6) To enculturate students into camaraderie and harmonious relationship among students and staff;
7) To cooperate with other student organizations in the department, college, or off-campus student organizations;
8) To support other objectives not mentioned above which are not in conflict with the department and college vision-mission statements as well as with Islamic morals, customs, tradition, and religion.
III. Membership. Any bona fide IT student of Higher College of Technology, specializing in Information Systems. Membership is non-discriminated. Members can come from any level (Certificate through BTech).
IV. Organizational Structure. The student organization shall have the following organizational structure.

V. Nomination and Election of Officers. The officers of the student organization shall be elected by Information Systems students once per academic year. Selection will be made by a nomination and voting process conducted at an assembly meeting with proper qurom. Titles of positions are indicated in Section
IV – Organizational Structure. Election of officers shall take place at the beginning of Semester 1 of the Academic Year.
VI. Roles and Responsibilities of Officers. The following are the roles and responsibilities of the elected officers.
The President
• Has a direct contact with the rest of the members of the organization
• Is responsible in the conduct of meetings, with written permission from the Supervisors (two Information Systems staff members)
• Reports activities and feedback to the Supervisor(s) but requires a minimum supervision, if necessary
• Represents the Information Systems student body
• Proposes student activities in line with the objectives of the organization
The Vice-President
• Reports to the President about any information from the Committee Coordinators concerned
• Is responsible in the conduct of meetings in the absence of the President
• Proposes student activities in line with the objectives of the organization
The Secretary
• Reports to the President about any information from the Vice-Presidents and Committee Coordinators concerned
• Writes down minutes of the meetings, assemblies, conferences, and the like
• Documents annual reports and other relevant documentation
• Collates results of the evaluation on each student activity
• Proposes student activities in line with the objectives of the organization
The Committee Coordinators
• Report to the concerned Vice-President about the progress of the Committee activities being handled
• Work hand-in-hand with the other Committee Coordinators
• Select additional members of the Committee, if a need arises
• Propose student activities in line with the objectives of the organization
The Committee Members
• Report to the Committee Coordinator concerned about the assigned tasks
• Work hand-in-hand with the other Committee Members
• Propose student activities in line with the objectives of the organization
VI. Meetings. The officers of the student organization shall have a meeting periodically. They are scheduled at a most convenient date and time. A written request for a meeting shall be sent to the Supervisor(s) for approval indicating the agenda. The meeting venue shall be announced by the Supervisor(s).
VII. Supervisorship. The word supervisorship here denotes 'minimum supervisorhip'. The Supervisors shall encourage students to be proactive such as ensuring that the officers of the student organization are performing their tasks according to this Terms of Reference. They have direct contact with the HoG to improve the student organization and to resolve problems arising therein.
The term of the supervisor(s) expire at the end of each Academic Year. Nomination for this supervisorship responsibility is decided by the HoG.
VIII. Calendar of Activities
Socio-academic activities have to be scheduled by the organization. Given the available resources and favorable permission, the following are the proposed activities

In a Voting Process, Seven Information Systems Student Organization Leaders were Elected

"It is our time to shine…", a student nominee expressively mentioned during the citing of platforms and plans during the election of Information Systems student officers last 8th of March, 2011 in N244. The election of officers had formally started with a warm welcome message by Dr. Maria Elisa Linda T. Cruz, HoG of Information Systems program, which was followed by a presentation delivered by Mr. Amando Singun, the supervisor of the Information Systems Student Organization. Ms. Najiba Al-Zadjali, also a supervisor of the organization, had maintained a smooth flow of the voting process. Special guests also joined the event namely, Dr. Ahmed Al-Kindi, the HoD of the IT Department and Ms. Rowena Simplina, an Information Systems staff member.
A significant number of Information Systems students had joined the activity and had voted for the following student leaders:

A Big Day for Information Systems Students and Staff

The ITBiz, newly-launched student organization of the Information Systems specialization, had organized an activity last 22nd of March 2011 in MPH with the theme "It is our time to shine…"
The venue was attended by students and staff of different departments, a number of HCT heads, guests such as Y Magazine and Muscat Daily media representatives, and sponsors.
The following were the highlights of the programme:
• launching of Information Systems program logo;
• launching of ITBiz student organization;
• induction of the newly-elected student officers; and
• awarding ceremony (logo competition and staff development program).
The programme had started formally by Ms. Miaad Al-Obaidani, President of ITBiz, with her welcome message. Dr. Maria Elisa Linda T. Cruz, head of the Information Systems and Multimedia groups, had formally launched the ITBiz student organization and had given the student officers' oath of office.
Intermission numbers were given by Abdullah Al-Alawi and Zamzam Al-Farsi with their poetic prowess. Using flowery Arabic words, the former expressed his ineffable love for His Majesty Sultan Qaboos while the latter fluently stated in English words her pride and love for HCT. After rendering her poem, bouquets of flowers were handed to Dr. Ahmed Masoud Al-Kindi, Head of the IT department, and Mr. Ibrahim Al-Amri, Assistant Dean for Administration and Finance, as a gesture of appreciation for their support to the students.
An informative as well as an entertaining movie, with ITBiz student officers as the main characters, was viewed. The movie promoted the Information Systems program.
Dr. Ahmed Masoud Al-Kindi, Head of the IT department, and Mr. Ibrahim Al-Amri, Assistant Dean for Administration and Finance, had officially launched the Information Systems program logo. Ms. Nawal Al-Dhanki, member of the board of judges of the logo competition, had announced the names of participants and presented the winners of the logo competition as follow:
• Adil Khamis Al Shihi (Diploma) – First Prize (winning logo designer)
• Shamsa Said Saif Al-Harthy (BTech) – Second Prize
The other participants of the logo competition were: Bushra Marhoon Al-Wahaibi, Entisar Salim Suliman Al-Dihani, Hamed Rashid Al-Hajri, Kareem Rashid, Majid Abdak Al-Balushi, Marwa Al-Haddabi, Rasha Hamed, and Shamsa Mohammed Al-Rashdi.
The members of the board of judges also received an award of appreciation namely:
• Mr. Mohammed Mushtaq (Multimedia, IT Lecturer)
• Ms. Nawal Al-Dhanki (McAffee Administrator, ETC Staff)
• Ms. Warda Al-Hooqani (Multimedia, IT Lecturer)
Mr. Randall Bernard, Sales Director of Friendie Mobile, had talked briefly about their products and services. As one of the sponsors of the activity, Friendi Mobile had given away prizes such as Friendi Mobile modems for the logo competition winners and a number of SIM cards to lucky winners during the raffle draw.
The staff members who had been invited as Resource Speakers and who had organized the Information Systems Value-Added Courses and the Staff Development Program also received an award of appreciation as follow.

Kareem Rashid Al-Hudaifi, Activities Coordinator of ITBiz, had formally closed the programme with an expressive closing message. In his message, he encouraged his fellow students to take part in any socio-academic activities of the ITBiz that would hone them as holistic individuals, staying with the theme "It is our time to shine…"
The activity lasted for almost two (2) hours.

Information Systems Student Leaders As Delegates of the COMEX Event

Some of the Information student-officers had served as volunteers during the COMEX event held last 24-29 of June 2011 in International Exhibition, Seeb. The event had boosted the student-officers' way of treating clients and customers as they dealt with a number of people and other delegates. They were also informed about the latest trends and technologies in Communications and Information Technology.

Thirteen (13) Information Systems student-leaders participated during the two-day First Technical Forum of Nizwa College of Applied Sciences held last 7-8 May, 2011, with the theme "Work Together to Support Open Source". During the event, the ITBiz student-leaders presented a number of E-Commerce course projects that had been developed using PHP, a Free Open Source Software (FOSS).
The ITBiz President - Ms. Miaad Al-Obaidani said, "I strongly believe that the group had acquired essential socio-academic learning experiences in this activity. We are looking forward to a similar activity in the near future…" Along with Ms. Miaad were other ITBiz student-leaders namely:
