7. Plant Biotechnology & Pathology Students Visit to Centre for Agriculture and Live Stock Research Bahla, Oman
3/21/2011
Date: 14th March 2011
Place of visit: Centre for Agriculture and Live Stock Research, Bahla
Department: Applied Sciences (Biology section)
Group/level visited: Group of 28 students (B.Tech level)
Courses: Plant Biotechnology & Pathology
Period of visit: 5hrs
Organizer: Ms. Sivirajan Anandhi
Staffs Accompanied: Dr. Mohammed Khan & Mr. Eduard Jandonero
The main objective of the visit is to expose the students with an insight operation of the various techniques and skills in plant tissue culture. Likewise, the visit will supplement the various theories acquired in the classrooms for simultaneous understanding and application.
The students were received by the officials of the research Centre, Mr. Abdullah Al Abri ( Engineer - Plant Tissue Culture Research Centre) and Mr Masoud Al Azri ( Plant Disease Research Centre) .A brief presentation on the operation of the center was given by Mr. Masoud in which students actively asked questions on the operation of the center. The presentation was interactive and informative. The students participated and clarified their queries.
The research activity in Center for Agriculture and Livestock was initiated by establishing a tissue culture laboratory in 1992 in Jemah Research Station (Ministry of Agriculture- Bahla). This laboratory was established for long term strategy to replace 3.1 million trees as economically important cultivars.
Students visited three major laboratories at the Center. (see photos attached)
1. Plant tissue culture Laboratory
2. Entomology Laboratory
3. Pathology Laboratory
Students were able to:
- Grasp the knowledge entailed in the Date Palm tissue culture and techniques required for plant propagation.
- Observe the mass propagation of local and imported date palm cultivars using the tissue culture techniques.
- Differentiate the multiplication of other plants species for different national projects.
- Analyze the Omani genetic resources, especially the major crops such as date palm and alfalfa.
- Identify different pathogenic organisms, specially the phytoplasmas.
- Understand importance of macro and micronutrients in making M.S. media..
- Observe different cultivars of date palms.
- Know the economic importance of the research centers.
- Become aware of the importance of Fard cultivars and the production of 500,000 offshoot in a five year plan.
- Appreciate the work done in Entomology laboratory.
- Identify the types of pathogens affecting Date palm trees.
- Understand the biological control of some plants in Oman.
Staffs of the center were helpful and supportive to the learning interest of the students during the visit. They even extended to provide us eight specimens of insects for Entomology and growth culture tubes of Date palm tissue culture.
It has been a very successful and fruitful trip. Our students had the rare opportunity to visit the training center. Such visits are recommended as a part of curriculum to gain more practical knowledge for the students. Even though it was a short trip but the knowledge gained impacted the student’s perspective in tissue culture.
