3rd English Language Teaching Professional Development Forum

The 3rd ELT Professional Development Forum was conducted in the English Language Center on 18th April, 2019. The theme of the forum was Bringing the English Classroom to Life. The forum was conceptualized, planned and organized by Ms. Ghada Sarhan, the Specialization and Professional Development Coordinator and a group of teachers and technicians, making up the Organizing Committee. It was a one-day program with 12 sessions including presentations and workshops. Eminent Teachers of English, Professors, Researchers and Trainers from across the city presented and shared their work and experiences.

The forum began with participant and presenter registration and a welcome speech by the ELC Director, Mr. Khalid Salim Al Balushi. The program started with a plenary session on Thinking Critically about 21st Century Skills by Mr. Jonathan Hadley, a Consultant for Cengage/National Geographic Learning.

To name a few presentations: Mr. Richard Frost from the British Council presented “Effective Classroom Instructions”, Mr. Richard Hock, from SQU shared some “Tried and tested activities to engage students” in the classroom. Another speaker from SQU, Mr. Jim Buckingham, presented two sessions- one on “Give away your lesson plan” and another on “Would I like to learn in my own classroom”.

Other presenters included; Ms. Noura Al Kalbani, Ministry of Education, Dr. Mariam Tufekchyan & Mr. Kamal Salah Balloumi, ELC HCT, Ms. Pooja Sancheti, SQU, Dr. Halima Benzoukh, Kasdi Merbah University, Ouargla, Algeria, Mr. Orlino JR. Rabaco, ELC, Nizwa, Ms. Evgeniya Minina, ELC, HCT. All the presentations were on the theme of Bringing the English Classroom to Life.

Over 140 teachers of English Language attended and actively participated in the sessions. To quote a few, “it was an enriching one-day workshop, short and sweet and enterprising.” Indeed, the Forum enhanced the professional development of the participants to entail and practice the concepts learned in their classroom teaching.   

In a follow-up event, Ms. Ghada thanked and rewarded the Organizing Committee with Certificates of Appreciation for their effortless contribution in the smooth and seamless success of the Forum.
