The UTAS-Muscat organized an online Spelling Bee-2021 inter-collegiate competition on Wednesday, December 15, 2021. All the colleges under the University of Technology and Applied Science (UTAS) were invited, and 15 students from 8 different UTAS colleges around Oman participated in this competition. All the participants showed great enthusiasm. The host, UTAS-Muscat, conducted the competition with the objective of helping students improve their English language skills and communications skills, and most importantly, to develop a self-confident personality. The aim was to reach out to a larger community of students and help them prepare for the future.
A spelling bee can spark a love of language that will serve them well throughout their entire lives. The literacy, cognitive, and life skills that they develop through study and competition have benefits far beyond the scope of mere spelling ability, reaching into every aspect of life and communication. Participating in a spelling bee may be hard work, but it can also be a lot of fun, with many unexpected rewards for all facets of life.
The competition started at 10 a.m. and went on for three hours. The program was organized and conducted by the Event Management Committee of the English Language Center, UTAS-Muscat. Two of the former Directors of the English Language Center, Muscat – Mr. Ahmed Al Dissi and Mr. Khalid Salim Al Balushi – graced the event as chief guests. The Director, Mr. Mohammed Al Kharusi, welcomed all and encouraged the sister colleges concerned to participate and enjoy the event. Mr. Reddappa Bonu, Coordinator of EMC spoke about the inception of the committee and started the competition. There were five rounds where the participants had to spell the words. After three rounds, there was an elimination. Only six participants were shortlisted based on their scores to play in the finals. In all, the participants displayed good competitive spirit and gave their best performances. Of the 6 finalists, 3 positions were declared: winner, 1st runner-up, 2nd runner-up. The winner’s position was bagged by Lulu Amer Al Habsi from UTAS-Muscat. The other positions were taken by UTAS-Shinas, UTAS-Sur and UTAS-Ibra, respectively.
