Industry and Community Engagement Committee in MIE Section organized a visit to Haya Water Treatment

In association with Industrial Link & Community Engagement committee the Chemical engineering, MIE section Bachelor students along with Dr. Manjula Puttaswamy and Mr. Nasser Abdullah Al Naabi, visited the Oman Water and Wastewater Services Company (Haya & Diam) on November 24th, 2022.

Oman Water and Wastewater Services Company was established under Royal Decree No. 131/2020 of December 9, 2020 to undertake the activities of water and wastewater in all governorates of the Sultanate, with the exception of the Governorate of Dhofar.

The team of Communication and Analysis headed by Mr. Ali Barkhat gave an insight to the treatments and services provided by the company. The company has excelled in treating the water and wastewater by incorporating efficient techniques. It has opted to use gravity in its favor for the flow of the water/ wastewater to reduce energy consumption with an exception in some of the coastal areas wherein pump stations are implemented. The details of wastewater treatment using membrane filtration, biological process and sludge treatment were briefed to the students including the characterization of water and wastewater treatments in their specialized laboratories. The treated effluent from the company is used for gardening and as a coolant in commercial units.

In addition, the students were introduced to the control team of the company where they were elucidated to the control system (SCADA), the monitoring and controlling process of the water lines at different locations around the Sultanate, the most significant challenges they face and solving the problems.

Furthermore, to add to its glory, the company is efficiently re-using the sewage sludge generated in the treatment plant along with green waste (horse stables manure) by converting into the Kala Compost (organic fertilizer) that can be used for agriculture, landscaping as well as for individual gardens. 

Finally, the Communication and Analysis team offered a fond adieu to the students and staff with luscious refreshment and promising future engagements with the university.
