An orientation program on the On-the-job training (OJT) was conducted at the department of applied sciences to the students aspiring for the OJT positions in the next semester (i.e. second semester of AY 2016-17) on 09.11.2016 from 10 am to 12.30 pm in the Multi-Purpose Hall (MPH)of the Higher College of Technology (HCT). The main objective of the program is to present a comprehensive picture of the OJT to the students.

This program was conducted by the OJT team at the department of applied sciences. A part of the presentation was done by Dr. D. Gopala Krishna, a faculty member of Applied Chemistry section and the present OJT coordinator of the department of applied sciences. Another part of the program was presented by Mr. Faisal Hamood Al-Kharousi, student activity coordinator and member of the OJT committee of the department of applied sciences.

The information about this event was given to all the students well in advance, through the HCT website and also through the bulk mails to the all the advisors and the advisees. Mr Faisal Al Kharousi had introduced all the members of the OJT team to the students and also briefly explained the purpose of OJT and the regular procedures to be followed in Arabic.

Dr.Gopala Krishna explained the rules and procedures to be followed by the students for the online registration, during and after the OJT training. Students were informed that they have to submit the completed OJT logbook within five working days after the completion of OJT for getting the clearance from the college or otherwise their names will be sent to Student Affairs for further action and this may delay their graduation.

The department of applied sciences had established a successful contact with almost 140 private and government organizations for OJT placements. Dr.Gopala Krishna also informed the students that, if they approach any company on their own, they must start the OJT within 15 days of their registration or otherwise they have to join the company that was allotted by OJT team of the department or by the student affairs. One of the OJT team members Dr Dinesh Bheeman was also present during this orientation program.  The students were made to understand that the main purpose and objective of OJT is to train them with the real work scenarios and they have to utilize this opportunity to equip themselves with all the soft skills that are very much needed to perform their duties as the future work force of Oman. The feedback collected from the students was very satisfactory.

Dr. D. Gopala Krishna expressed his profound thanks to Dr. Mohammed Ali Oueslati, Head of the Department of Applied Sciences, all the Heads of sections/Unit and all the other departmental colleagues, especially the OJT team members for their active support and co-operation. The orientation program was well attended and was successful with a brief question and answer session.

This activity was conducted by department of applied sciences in order to meet the partial requirements of Goal-8 of the strategic plan: “We will provide facilities and learning resources that are effectively utilized and well-managed to ensure efficient student and staff services”.
