Applied Sciences Department
Chemistry Laboratories
The Chemistry Section of the Department of Applied Sciences currently has five laboratories serving as venues for learning and discovery for 2,000 Engineering and Science students every semester. The five labs – M104, M106, M108, M142, and M144 – are conveniently located at the ground floor of the Science Building.
Certificate level and lab school students conduct experiments in these labs to confirm and reinforce basic chemistry principles taught in the theory classes. In the hands-on learning process, students get to operate laboratory equipment, guided in the correct execution of laboratory techniques, and most importantly imbibe lab safety awareness.
Diploma, Higher Diploma, and B. Tech. students probe and explore higher chemistry courses in these labs. Under the tutelage of highly qualified Lecturers and with the assistance of able Laboratory Technicians, students unravel the abstractions of organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, environmental chemistry, and physical chemistry. The learning paradigm fosters development of analytical skills and independent thinking which are indispensable attributes when students begin to work on their respective projects.
The Section has dedicated one of the five Chemistry labs - M104 - as its Instrumentation Lab. Said lab is equipped with a gas chromatograph, UV/Visible spectrophotometers, flame photometers, colorimeters, polarimeters, conductivity meters, and calorimeters.
Recently, the Chemistry Section acquired a High Performance Liquid Chromatograph (HPLC), an Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (AAS), and a Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrophotometer (FTIR). All of these equipment are stationed in M104.
With the acquisition of additional state of the art equipment, students are now presented with broader options for projects involving qualitative and quantitative characterization of matter. Students are now more encouraged to venture into projects involving reaction mechanism elucidation and isolation and characterization of natural products.
With labs provided with competent Staff and high-end laboratory resources, HCT can now look forward to its students presenting papers in scientific fora or having their projects published in reputable scientific journals. The available resources will also prove to be valuable tools in the college’s vision to encourage the pursuit of research among its academic staff.
