Globally educational systems and institutions are aligning their resources in creating an overall personality development for the students through well-structured curricular and extra-curricular activities. Department of Applied Sciences is thriving hard to bring a positive change in every student by encouraging them to participate in many national and international competitions.
Department of Applied Sciences along with Research and Consultancy Committee (RCC) of HCT conducted an orientation workshop for the students and staff of the entire college on the “Falling Walls Lab” competition to be conducted in Oman on 7-May-2018 by inviting experts from “The Research Council (TRC)” of Oman on 27th February, 2018 from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon at HCT Auditorium. The experts from TRC conducted the English version of the orientation workshop initially and then the Arabic version was also presented. A wide publicity about the conduction of the workshop was given to the entire college by posting the invitation on the college website by the Research and Consultancy Committee (RCC).
The expert from the TRC was very systematic in her presentation and brought to the notice of the audience that Falling Walls Conference is a yearly event conducted in Berlin, Germany to mark the anniversary of the falling wall at Berlin in 1989. The one-day grand finale for the year 2018 will be conducted on 8, November. The conference showcases the research work of the best ideas from 100 international scientists from all scientific fields. The conference is organized by an independent non-profit institution entitled the Einstein Foundation supported by the German Ministry of Education and Research and the Berlin Senator for Education, Science and Research.
These types of competitions provide the students with great opportunities to showcase their hidden talents and challenge themselves to reach their dreams by testing their ideas and presenting them before the top class employers. The motivation for participation in this competition is through the reward of getting tickets to Berlin and provision of comfortable stay during the conference for the 100 successful winners from all over the Globe.
The program was attended by the HoD of Applied Sciences Dr. Mohammed Ali Oueslati along with the HoS of Physics Unit Mr. Shabir Ahmed Nadeem, HoS of Applied Biology section, Dr. Afraa Said Al-Adawi and the HoS of Applied Chemistry section, Dr. Wafa Mustafa Al Lawati. The question and answer session was very interesting as many of the staff members and students enthusiastically participated and the HoD of applied sciences Dr. Mohammed Ali Oueslati suggested the TRC experts that there should be some incentive for each and every participant coming to the competition and the TRC members welcomed the suggestion and assured that the same will be presented to the hierarchy.
Under the encouragement and support of the HoD of applied sciences, Dr. Mohammed Ali Oueslati the HoS of Environmental Sciences & Co-ordinator of RCC, Dr. Suad Al Kindi, promoted the event in co-ordination with the Head of departmental Research committee, Dr.Pankaj Sah and Head of departmental Staff Development committee, Dr. C. Rama Chandra Prabhu. It is noteworthy to mention that the HoD of applied sciences, Dr. Mohammed Ali Oueslati offered his services to be a jury member for these competitions conducted by the TRC in Oman. In an earlier competition conducted in 2016, the presentation by a staff member of Applied Sciences Department won a second position among the 128 entries from Sultanate of Oman.

This event is conducted in accordance with Goal 4: We will ensure that our graduates develop into responsible citizens by enriching their values and attributes to positively affect the socio economic development and Goal 6: We will encourage opportunities for applied Research and Consultancy of the HCT strategic plan. The event was very successful and well attended and met all its objectives.
