Message from the HOD
Our Department of Engineering is taking a proactive role in providing qualified technicians, technologists, and professionals in the different fields of engineering to contribute in the development of Sultanate of Oman. Our legacy traces back to 1984 when the Department of Engineering was founded as an integral part of Oman Technical Industrial College, OTIC, (HCT now). Throughout its history, the Department of Engineering was closely aligned to the local job market through catering for its needs of qualified manpower.
In search for the right caliber of national workforce, our government embarked on a radical plan to improve the local manpower through the Vision Oman 2020. At the core of such a plan was increasing enrollment into higher education and technical colleges. The role the Department of Engineering plays in such a plan is pivotal by providing education and training to Omani youngsters to enable them to join the job market.
Our department has established itself as a good career entry point. We have the largest undergraduate engineering program in the nation with a current enrollment of about 4,000 students. The Department aims to be nationally acclaimed as a leader in producing innovative graduates and research that focus on meeting the present and future needs of society. It strives to improve the lives of the citizens of Oman through services and research.
In addition to its size, the Department of Engineering offers a diverse selection of specializations to its students and the job market. Currently, the Department, based on the scrutiny of forecasting the demand in the Industries for certain Engineering branches, started Land surveying specialization in the Civil and Architecture Engineering (CAE) Section, Chemical Engineering in the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MIE) section, and Biomedical Engineering in the Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) Section.
Moreover, the face of the Department of Engineering is set to revolutionize with finalizing the remodeling of its current spaces and the introduction of several new facilities. A big drive to revamp the facilities at the department is under way. New projects that will significantly enhance the department’s abilities to deliver knowledge and training are under way. The future looks bright and promising.
