On Tuesday 22 March 2016, Community Service Club members visited the Children’s Oncology Ward at the Royal Hospital in Al-Ghubrah.
One week before the visit, the club received donations which were then used to buy gifts and games for the patients. These were divided by age group, gift wrapped and marked for easy distribution at the hospital.
On the day of the visit, 18 student volunteers, Ms Asma Al-Baraiki, Ms Satya Lakshmi and Ms Heidi Manus arrived at the Royal Hospital at around 9:15am. They were welcomed by medical and HR staff.
Around 20 children and their parents arrived at the hall that had been prepared for the event. They were entertained with games and rewarded with prizes. Two of the student volunteers dressed up as Micky and Mini Mouse-which delighted the smaller kids.
After an hour, a group of students took the remaining gifts which were taken to other children’s wards in the hospital.
Both students and teachers were deeply touched by this interaction and plan on regular visits in the future.
